xx [event] Aloha.pk Halloween Buildcon 2014
October 24, 2014, 03:34:14 PM HST by shywolf91

It’s that time of the year again. Halloween is near and we at aloha.pk have a massive and spooktacular
event planned for you. It’s time to put your creative and haunting skills to the test and become the best
builder for the 2014 Halloween buildcon.

Spoiler for times worldwide:

Date:October 31- November 2
Time:The event will officially start on Friday October 31 at 11 pm GMT
Server: TBA

Spoiler for map:

@Danko thanks for changing the colors

Spoiler for build server:
The map is divided into grid sectors:

Spoiler for Grid Sector Image:

You can see these on the map by pressing "m" ("n" in OpenSpades).  You can go to any sector and claim it, which means only you can build on it.  Additionally, you can share this sector with your friends, and they'll be able to build on it any time they like, even if you're not around.  In this way, you can work together on a project without worrying about someone griefing it when you're gone.

From the server status page, you can see what sectors are claimed, and who currently in the server has permission to build where.  Put your cursor over the coordinates and it'll tell you who owns that sector.

Now, in order to claim a sector, you must login.  Anyone with a forum account can build: it's done automatically when you registered on our forums here on Aloha.pk.  If you haven't registered yet, do so now!  There's no need to apply for trusted or anything like that.  Just having a forum account is all you need.  When on the server, you simply use:

/login forumname password
or
/login "my forum name" password

Where forumname is the exact spelling of your forum name here, and your password is the same as well (you can change your in-game password to be different from your forum password under profile > modify profile if you'd like).  If your name has spaces in it, just wrap it in "quotation marks".  Example: /login "o hai there" mypass

Once logged in, you'll have access to the following commands:
  • /claim
    This allows you to claim a sector as your own, if it hasn't been claimed by someone already.  You can only claim ONE sector at a time.

  • /unclaim
    This removes your claim.  You'll no longer be able to build on your sector, but you can claim another one.  Anyone you shared this sector with will also no longer be able to build on it (although anyone can claim it now).

  • /share PLAYER
    Use this command to share your sector with anyone you'd like currently on the server.  They must be logged in, however, to be able to build on your sector.  Replace PLAYER with the name of the player you'd like to share with, or just use their # as listed by pressing tab in game.  Example: /share ei8htx, or /share #5.  Obviously, you must have already claimed a sector to share one.

  • /unshare PLAYER
    Use this to unshare a sector with someone.  The player must currently be online on the server.  If they're not online, a work around would be to quickly /unclaim your sector, and then reclaim it.  This would make you the only owner, and all persons who were shared before will have lost their privileges.

  • /sector
    This command tells you the coordinates of the sector you're in, and who currently owns it, as well as anyone else the sector is shared with.

  • /findsector
    Tells you all the sectors currently unclaimed.  This may come in handy on event day!

That's it for all the claiming commands.  The build server also includes some very powerful tools from SuperCoolBuild, which you may have seen on BuildandShoot.com.  You can do things like rising platforms, switches, and locking doors.  Check out a more in-depth thread on these commands here:

http://aloha.pk/index.php?topic=3571.0

Very important to remember: It's first come, first serve!  When the event starts, join quick to get your sector and claim it.  There are 64 sectors total (8*8), so there's plenty to go around, but if you want a nice spot, be on time!  If you just want to work on one sector with a friend or 2, you don't all have to claim a sector.  Just one of you can /claim it, and then /share with all of you.

A competition will be held for this buildcon and there will be prizes for the best builds.
If you would like to submit your build for the competition please private message me (shywolf91)
before November 6 2014 at 8 AM GMT. Entries will not be approved if received later than then
November 6 at 8 AM GMT.

Prizes:

Only one person in each prize tier will win a prize.

Rules:
  • Submission deadline: November 6 by 8 AM GMT
    • Only the sector owner will win a prize.
    • Voting begins Friday November 7 2014 and will last a week
  • The top three voted sectors will win.
  • Theme: building something Halloween related is not mandatory, but is highly encouraged.
  • Cheating, hacking, and rude behavior of any kind will not be tolerated and may result in a ban.

A separate thread will be made for the competition/voting after the event is over. Please do not forget to send in your submissions and have a fun Halloween.

Please pm me (shywolf91) if you want to submit your creation using the following template:
Spoiler for template:
Yes, I want my sector to be entered into the Halloween Buildcon 2014 competition!

Sector:
{put sector here, ex: A1}

Screenshot:
{optional. post a link to your screenshot}

The event is first come first served so don't be late.

Spoiler for credits:

@ferrariflunker for the main buildcon logo

@Danko for the modified map

@shywolf91 for organizing and preparing the buildcon event

We hope you enjoy this halloween event

GG! Event over. Thanks for playing...Please post recordings

For the October 2014 FSOM we will playing Ten Story Towers
GameMode: "Climb your enemies' tower to get their intel"

Times Worldwide

Mode: Ten Story Towers
Date:October 4, 2014
Time: 8pm GMT
Server:Ten Story Towers

Don't be late and reserve your seat here

Spoiler for Mumble Info:
Mumble can be downloaded here:
http://www.mumble.com/

Download the client software on the right side of the screen.  Installation is pretty simple, as there's a wizard when you first start the application to help you set up your mic and audio.

I highly recommend using a button to activate it, rather than having your mic turn on automatically when it picks up noise.  This is especially true for laptop users or those using a webcam w/ mic.  You'll have this option towards the end of the wizard (my push-to-talk is set to mouse button 5, your scroll button (click, not scroll) is also free in aos for you 3 button mouse owners).

If you choose to do push-to-talk, keep your threshold rather low (so that it's easier to pick up sounds), this means your blue part of the meter should be small.  If instead you are using auto-detect, be sure to keep your threshold toward the high end, or else the rest of us will pick up your game and background noise, which can get quite irritating, especially with 16 people.

Once you've setup your microphone, click the picture of the world icon.  Then click "Add New" and enter the following:

Label: Aloha
Address: Mumble.aloha.pk
Port: 64738 (unchanged)
Username:  Your username.   Please stick to your most common username, as after you register, you'll never get to change it.

For more detailed mumble setup information, check out this post here: http://aloha.pk/index.php?topic=3721.msg34375#msg34375

Once you're connected, double click on Aloha to put you in that channel.  On the event day there will be channels for Blue and Green team.

Spoiler for leaderboard:
Of course during this event you can also record your game statistics by logging in to our new leaderboard with your forum name and password.
Read this for more information about our leaderboard.
Caution: only log in with this name and pass on aloha.pk servers. You can set a specific aos-password in your forum profile.

Please try to be on mumble and in the IRC 15 minutes prior to the event.  You can find the IRC webchat link on the top right corner of aloha home page.  Thanks!

xx Reflex
September 22, 2014, 02:46:07 PM HST by topo
hello everybody today i am here to tell you about reflex :-)

it's an arena deathmatch first-person shooter game, currently in a pre-alpha stage of development. the developers have a ton of industry experience and are themselves avid gamers. here's their kickstarter trailer!

seem a lot like quake to you?
it is a lot like quake. one of the developers used to also develop cpma - a hardcore mod for quake 3 which made the game even more fun than vanilla q3.
the reflex developers took cpma's gameplay as a base from which to work and built an entirely new engine for it in their spare time - all three also work fulltime jobs, and they have been spending what time they weren't using to sleep or make money working on this for the last 18 months.

so why play this when you could play quake or any of its innumerable mods?

  • the fast-paced arena fps genre has been slowly dying for several years now. there's a small playerbase spread over far too many mods of quake, and this game has the potential to unite the majority of these players
  • ease of use! a major problem with quake and its various mods has been that it's just too difficult to get into. the developers recognize this and plan on spending a lot of time on making the game accessible and creating high quality built-in tutorials
  • in-game multiplayer map editing. you can make and simultaneously (by yourself or with friends) playtest maps. i don't think i need to explain why this is awesome :)
  • in-game replay editing. fragmovies are easy \:D/
  • dedicated servers and lan support
  • high performance and responsive input (targeting 120fps with 1000hz input sampling)
  • awesome spectator features. multiview, casting overlays, on-screen live statistics, spectator vs spectator interaction
  • steamworks integration - friends, achievements, VoIP, player invites + more
  • bots. one of the developers has decades of experience with ai and has the very ambitious goal of creating the best ai ever seen in an fps game. bots will use the tricks, stats, strategy and spam binds of real players

need more? check out their greenlight! http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=317361451

apologies for the slightly unreadable text, but here's some info on the developers

i'd just like to say that i have no affiliation with any of the developers but i'm really, really excited for this game and hope you guys are too. help it get greenlit and spread the word! if you're feeling generous you could even help back it on kickstarter

xx a little forgiveness, another chance: partial purge of AoS bans
September 16, 2014, 01:04:33 PM HST by izzy
we've been hosting pyspades servers since late 2011 and over time our dedicated team of admins have issued more than 36,000 bans to cheaters and troublemakers, which has kept the game playable for all of us:

Quote
<@Danko> http://i.imgur.com/oG1evev.png

we agreed that most of these bans are now likely irrelevant due to their age, so we've decided to forgive the past by removing the oldest and less severe newer bans (thanks to BR for making that easy) as summarized below:
  • all bans issued from late 2011 through December 31, 2013
  • all bans issued this year EXCEPT those that have a reason of "aimbot" or "ESP"
if you were previously banned and fit into the above description then this is your lucky day! :) but please don't take this chance for granted because we remain active and still have record of all old bans that can be crosschecked with present offenses.

xx new maps halongbabel and crossfire3 added to Babel server
September 03, 2014, 01:33:39 PM HST by izzy
Lostmotel created and released a couple Tower of Babel maps for us based on our feedback.

first up is halongbabel, which is themed as Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, followed by the desert-themed crossfire3:

Also, I created this map called crossfire 3. Not sure if it would be fun on babel but I think it's an interesting idea to have destructible side paths like this which could change the gameplay dynamics of the map drastically once griefed.

xx a gift for you from us because every gamer should experience The Ship!
August 28, 2014, 05:48:54 PM HST by izzy
it's an online 32 player stealthy assassin-like pvp fps where each player is assigned a victim who he has to hunt down while watching his own back so he doesn't get murdered by his attacker. attacking someone who isn't your victim or attacker pretty much turns you into duck soup unless you're super sneaky. patience is key! makes for some serious fun and intense gameplay.

there's a deal on Bundle Stars right now.. only $1 per key which includes 2 extra giftable copies:
http://www.bundlestars.com/store/the-ship-complete-pack/
keys are limited so if you can afford to buy 1 or 2 or more, grab them now before it's too late.

i already purchased 6 keys, which is 18 copies... so if you want a copy just reply here with your Steam ID and join our Steam group while you're at it: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/alohapk

if you purchase a key or receive a key that has 2 extra copies, please help gift them to other people who request a copy here.

and be sure to reply here if you receive a copy or gift a copy so we know who still hasn't received a copy. thanks, have fun!

xx Babel Gamemode Update
July 24, 2014, 12:11:41 PM HST by ei8htx
The babel gamemode on Aloha has recently been updated.
  • Fog now properly loads on a new map (and doesn't affect the intel grab/drop flash).
  • The green/red team can now build 1 block below and adjacent to heavens like the blue team can (this is actually re-adding a fix that was written over accidentally)
  • Map makers can use the mapname.txt file to change player and tent spawns.
  • Map makers can define the heavens color.
Both new features are completely backwards compatible with mapname.txt files that exist now (or don't exist at all).  The game uses the original defaults if not explicitly defined in mapname.txt.  The convention used for spawn locations and fog color in all other mapname.txt files is still used here, and most of these should be compatible with the new script without modification.

An example of what a mapname.txt file looks like with these features is the latest update to ellipsis (which is currently on the server):

Spoiler for ellipsis.txt:
name = 'Ellipsis'
version = '1.3'
author = 'ei8htx'
description = ('Now with more scripting!')
extensions = {
   'water_damage' : 8,
   'babel' : True,
   'heavens_color' : (250, 130, 40, 255)
}

fog = (150, 255, 255)

AREA = (98, 236, 374, 276,) #blue x1, both y1, green x1, both y2
WIDTH = 40
BLUE_RECT =  (AREA[0], AREA[1], AREA[0]+WIDTH, AREA[3]) #x1, y1, x2, y2
GREEN_RECT = (AREA[2], AREA[1], AREA[2]+WIDTH, AREA[3])

from pyspades.constants import *
from pyspades.server import ServerConnection

def get_spawn_location(connection):
   if connection.team is connection.protocol.blue_team:
      return connection.protocol.get_random_location(True, BLUE_RECT)
   elif connection.team is connection.protocol.green_team:
      return connection.protocol.get_random_location(True, GREEN_RECT)

def get_entity_location(team, entity_id):
   if entity_id == GREEN_BASE:
      return (256+138, 256, team.protocol.map.get_z(256+138, 256))
   if entity_id == BLUE_BASE:
      return (256-138, 256, team.protocol.map.get_z(256-138, 256))

It's important to note that usually not including all 4 entity IDs in get_entity_location() is a bad idea.  However the intel is fixed in babel, and should not be defined in the mapname.txt (if it is it'll be ignored anyway).  The script defines get_entity_location() for the intel first, then passes on to the mapname.txt for the tent locations.  Mapname.txt files that incorporate all 4 can still be used; just the intel spawn locations will be ignored (tent locations will be used).

Also, if anyone has any ideas/suggestions on stuff that should be incorporated into current maps (fog, heavens color, spawns), reply here!  I'm 90% certain drift ice should not be spawning the players in the water now, and I moved the tents up by about 5 blocks so they spawn on top of the plateau.

The updated babel_script.py is here:  babel_script.py  (also wow, mediafire formats code now!)
You'll still need an original babel.py file (that is the companion file that comes with babel_script.py).  For more info check out the BnS thread.

Spoiler for aloha mumble:

Of course during this event you can also record your game statistics by logging in to our new leaderboard with your forum name and password.
Read this for more information about our leaderboard.
Caution: only log in with this name and pass on aloha.pk servers. You can set a specific aos-password in your forum profile.

thumbup new Australia servers, Europe servers, and “smashoff” server
April 05, 2014, 12:42:18 AM HST by izzy
recently we put up some AoS servers in Australia and Europe. big thanks to topo for providing the resources in Australia and rakiru for providing the resources in Europe.

Australia

Europe (France)

we also have a new server running the smashoff game mode by Dr.Morphman. in this game mode, causing damage to enemies physically pushes them away from you. the more damage you cause, the farther back they will be pushed. the goal? to smash them off the edge of the map to their death! :D
